Tryouts, multi-sport, and sports guidelines
Our goal is communication.
As that relates to tryouts and other areas for upcoming teams and seasons, we want to make sure we clearly communicate expectations for parents and athletes.
If you’re an athlete in season, and there is a tryout for an upcoming sport season please follow these steps and guidelines.
1. First, communicate with the upcoming season coach, and indicate your intent to play by signing up or emailing that coach. Your actual tryout will happen once you’re in-season sport is over, due to safety and protection for the team you’re on currently in that season. This is a change. If a coach needs to see a player for a day an exception could be made, but we will not share athletes in season with upcoming seasons.
2.Second, an athlete may observe a workout or training session and help the incoming sport but there should be no contact or skills run of that sport practiced while in a current sport season.
We are encouraging athletes to play multiple sports and some may very well overlap the same season. When this occurs parents and athletes are the ultimate decision-makers of which sport the athlete will do. Please know that practices in school events trump non-school events and games trump practices, and if parents and/or athletes decide to go non-school route the coach gets to decide the players involvement with the team and playing time. Also, just a nugget, we do not discuss playing time with the coach and if you do have questions, please do not confront the coach before or after a game if you are concerned regarding your athlete’s status or decision-making. The best time to do that is 24 hours following the game or match.
Also, follow the Matthew 18 principle.
Example – Bill wants to play baseball and golf. He also plays travel baseball We will encourage Bill to do both but also work it out between the coaches on which one takes precedent if games fall on the same day. Games trump practice. School trumps travel. Those decisions will be determined by the parent and the athlete along with coach advice, but ultimately that decision will come down to a parent/ athlete decision but playing time is the coaches decision.
Last thing, moving forward the word “optional” is loosely defined and that mindset needs to change. Our mindset as a program needs to be our athletes need to be there. Practices, workouts, or games all matter, and all are important regardless of season. Out of season training, off season and summer workouts are highly encouraged, not optional. Will there be misses yes but we must foster an attitude of growth. The have-to mindset needs to be replaced with a get- to mindset and to be present not find ways to miss. As a student athlete it requires more. If you are multi sport athlete, you have to give and sacrifice more. Please help with this mindset change.
